MERIDEN — During an April incident in which five police officers were injured, officers drew their weapons but held their fire as three shooting suspects rammed through a roadblock on North Second Street, recently released video shows.

Place overview

Recorded on April 26 at Meriden Pawn, W. Main St. Officer Garrett Ficara suffered a concussion when he was pinned between his cruiser and the Impala and Detective John Dorais suffered a broken foot in the melee. John Wagner suffered sprains and were back on duty the following day.

Dorais returned to work in a few days and Ficara was out for a month, police spokesman Lt. Darrin McKay said. The pawnshop surveillance is among 20 videos and about 90 photos the city released last week in response to a Record-Journal Freedom of Information Act request.

Fifty-seven s of police documents on the incident were issued two weeks ago. The others show the immediate aftermath, including officers tending to Ficara.

The action begins about 30 seconds into the video with a police cruiser and a police SUV coming east on West Main and turning onto North Second Street. The Impala pushed the sports utility vehicle back several feet before starting forward again.

Amazing video

It is clear from the video that at least one officer was on the street standing between the parked cruiser and the Impala while another was on the sidewalk. Dorais was standing on the sidewalk. McKenna and Officer Omar Baker, who was driving with Ficara, helped Ficara stagger to the sidewalk and sit on grass after the Impala drove away. McKenna radioed for an ambulance immediately, according to the documents.

Police found the Impala at Chamberlain Highway and Pasco Street minutes later and arrested the three suspects. Luis Comacho, 25, of 82 Gravel St. Miguel Acevedo, 18, of 15 Union St. The juvenile was charged with carrying a pistol without a permit, weapons in a motor vehicle and interfering with police.

He was transferred to a juvenile detention facility in Hartford. The video documented the most hazardous violence police encountered during a violent April that saw a homicide and at least two shootings, along with eight other incidents of reported gunfire in which police recovered slugs or shells.

The suspects were wanted in connection with one of those shootings, on April 16, and were allegedly armed with two handguns that police recovered after a brief chase. The photos that police released appear to show a handgun in a recycling container and another handgun and a handgun magazine in shrubs.
