Academics said the rise in consumption owed more to women's growing independence, greater spending power and increasing tendency to live alone. Three and a half million women are thought to be drinking so much that they are putting their health at risk. Critics say Labour's licensing laws, which allow some bars to stay open around the clock, encourage drinking to excess and have fuelled crime.

The Joseph Rowntree Foundation researchers said the rise in heavy drinking among women was linked both to greater acceptance of women in pubs and bars and to more wine being bought for consumption at home.

The Drinking in the UK study, carried out by Dr Lesley Smith and academics from Oxford Brookes University, is based on analysis of the of seven separate regular Whitehall surveys. It said that women continue to be less likely to drink than men and that those who do consume, consume less than men.

But it said that 'the greater increase in alcohol consumption in women over recent years, with the gap between the genders closing, gives rise to current concerns. The researchers pointed to a range of reasons why more women are binge drinking - or regularly consuming more than the recommended daily amount of three units, or one and a half glasses of wine.

As well as increased wealth and independence, the factors included the 'ladette' culture that has made drinking appear glamorous.

Alcohol use was found to be heavier among the growing of women who are living alone either because they have remained single or because they have divorced or separated. The study said: 'Women drink more wine than men and wine has been getting cheaper, wine strength has increased and wine glasses have been getting larger, disproportionately affecting women's drinking more than men.

Women are more likely to be home drinkers and, as home drinking is increasing, we would expect women's drinking to increase relative to men's. It added that many women using alcohol to an excessive and harmful extent 'do not see their own consumption as remarkable'. Affluence, a good education and a professional job were among factors associated with heavy drinking among women.

But the study added: 'Woman who are unmarried, separated or divorced are more likely to drink in excess of recommended limits than women who are married or cohabiting. Researchers said that older drinkers, while being less aware of the health risks, were generally in good shape.
